Dongak Langit - Saponins

About Saponins.

Saponins are a class of chemical compounds, found in natural sources, with saponins found in particular abundance in various plant species. Saponins have historically been understood to be plant-derived, but they have also been isolated from marine organisms. Saponins are found in various parts of the plant: leaves, stems, roots, bulbs, blossom, and fruit. Other sources are available via controlled manufacturing processes, which make them of use as chemical and biomedical reagents. Cholesterol is an important part of a healthy body because it's used to form cell membranes, some hormones and is needed for other functions such as digestion. But a high level of cholesterol in the blood (hypercholesterolemia) is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attack. Saponins form strong insoluble complexes with cholesterol. This has many important implications, including cholesterol-lowering activity in humans. Saponins are believe include mechanisms that can stimulate the immune system, ward off microbial and fungal infections, protect against viruses, and even act as spermicide.
